5 questions to Ilse Kwaaitaal, director of Impact Hub Amsterdam

Over the past few years, many truths have been revealed about our current capitalist model: severe income inequality and the belief that improving lives and caring for the environment can be sacrificed for better profit margins. The change makers in the growing Certified B Corporations community are demanding an end to the myth that profit comes at the expense of purpose, and care for the environment and society. It's time to wake up, it's time for action.

At Blyde, we believe in questioning the status quo. We believe in the strength of the collective, in taking a stand and inspiring people by showing what can and should be changed. In our Wake Up Calls, Blyde inspires a desire for positive change. We're listening to various B Corps voices speak about their call to action for companies around the world today. By letting people from different perspectives and companies have their say, we want to highlight the important role of business in this decade of action. 'On stage' today: change agent Ilse Kwaaitaal, director at Impact Hub Amsterdam.

What does the Impact Hub do?
Impact Hub Amsterdam assists companies, large and small, in developing sustainable innovations that contribute to a better future. They help organizations make their products, processes and business models more sustainable by offering their expertise and targeted programs. With their network of experts and partners, they support entrepreneurs in creating both economic and social value, and stimulate collaborations to accelerate sustainability goals.

What are you proud of?
I am proud that we have already helped set up more than 5000 sustainable business models, together with startups and other organizations. More and more companies are realizing that true sustainability requires innovation in their business model.

We enjoy working with sustainable entrepreneurs and large companies. I am most proud when we show large companies how they can become more sustainable through innovation, instead of sticking to the old way of working. For example, we have been working with AM & Elgra for three years on a process to grow our own raw materials for construction.

Speaking of radical honesty, what else needs to change within your company to be truly good ancestors?
We are exploring the possibility of becoming stewardship-owned so that we can better embed our mission. This model gives ownership and control to people who are directly involved in the mission. For example, decisions are made by those who really care about the company and its goals, rather than by external shareholders who focus primarily on profits.

What was your wake-up call to contribute to a better world?
Since I can remember, I've been writing my papers and giving my speeches about climate change. I can't remember a specific moment; it was always clear to me that I wanted to do work that contributes to a better world.
